HeiGIT analysed how many new OSM contributors would have run into the OSM upload limits between January and October 2023 if the limits had existed back then.
Request for comments have been made for these proposals:
Flood_assets: for mapping natural and man-made assets contributing to flood defence or coastal protection functions
Elevator_dimensions: a standardised way to record the dimensions of an elevator.
The vote on the Menstrual products proposal is open until Friday 9 February.
Mapping campaigns
HeiGIT invites you to a mapathon to be held at the university in Heidelberg on Wednesday 7 February at 7 pm, in the Hörsaal Auditorium, Berliner Straße 48.
The Danish OpenStreetMap community organised the first monthly mapping project for this year, mapping public street lighting.

The OSM Operations team has tooted that OpenStreetMap help will be read-only from Friday 1 March. For almost two years now the OpenStreetMap Community forum has been a place to go for questions and answers about OpenStreetMap (we reported earlier).
Courtney Cook, a member of the Communication Working Group of the OpenStreetMap Foundation, has initiated an OpenStreetMap Community forum topic asking for suggestions on how to celebrate OpenStreetMap’s 20th anniversary, which be on Friday 9 August.
ZekOwney blogged ► on how he added hiking trails in his region to OpenStreetMap.

Shohei Higashiyama►, et al. have developed the ‘Arukikata Travelogue Dataset with geographic entity Mention, Coreference, and Link annotation’, a geo-parsing dataset created by linking geo-references in the Arukikata► travelogue service with OpenStreetMap objects.
Humanitarian OSM
Antidius Kawamala released a report on the humanitarian mapping efforts for the floods and landslides that occurred in Hanang District, Manyara, Tanzania.
Maps
K. Sakanoshita published► an article about the behind-the-scenes production of a public information board by local volunteers in a residential area around Hankyu Railway Awaji Station (we reported earlier). It was produced over about a year as part of ‘Open Awaji’, an event where DIY and other activities are done using open data.
Kirill Bon has released OpenLandcoverMap, a map that displays average land cover zones on a hexagonal grid processed from OpenStreetMap’s landuse=* and natural=* tags.
OSM in action
Sergey Golubev and the Cartetika► team have digitised the Red Book of St Petersburg (list of threatened species) and visualised it on an OSM map.
Open Data
You can apply for an Open Mapping Mini-Grant, by Open Data Day, before Monday 5 February. These grants support eight global events with USD 300 each, focused on open mapping and sustainable development goals.
Software
Stadia Maps has published Ragnarök, a browser-based tool for visually inspecting and debugging routes from Valhalla.
oudalricus reported in the community forum that TomTom’s free, ad-free satnav app AmiGO now uses OpenStreetMap map material throughout. Only the traffic data still comes from TomTom itself. There does not appear to have been any official announcement about this.
Programming
Tobias Knerr announced OpenStreetMap’s planned participation in Google’s Summer of Code 2024. They are currently looking for project ideas and mentors from OpenStreetMap’s open source software ecosystem.
Terence Eden is trying to create a FourSquare-like location-based social media service by using the ActivityPub protocol and OpenStreetMap. He is still looking for collaborators to create an ActivityPub server that publishes the geotagged notes to the Fediverse.
TrickyFoxy has written a FireFox extension to help script developers to get an OAuth2 token in a couple of clicks.
Anatoly Alizar explained► how to set up a protomaps-based vector map server.
atilla666 explained► how to create an offline map by using Maperitive to download OpenStreetMap’s map tiles.

… that UN Mappers has launched the ‘OSM Advanced‘ course on the UN Maps Learning Hub under a CC-BY-SA licence? It now offers an initial guide to learning validation techniques and tools (such as OSM Task Manager validation steps, JOSM tools and plug-ins, Overpass, Osmose, Whodidit, OSMCha), then a guide to learning how to interact with OSM contributors, and finally a guide that offers a specific validation workflow for different map objects with a long-term perspective. It is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and soon in Chinese. As this Learning Hub is based on Moodle, you will need to sign up to access it.
