Mapping

  • aaei924 has proposed an improvement to the OpenStreetMap road classification system used in the Korean region.
  • MapAmore reported that Microsoft MapBuilder is now enforcing a validation system by a team of validation specialists to improve the quality of data they add to OpenStreetMap.
  • Rtnf discussed several benefits of a systematic cataloguing of OSM object IDs on the OSM Wiki.

Community

  • Infinite_Bed has made the decision to map all the house numbers in Lancaster and blogged about their progress. In the comments readers helped by proposing different tools.
  • After having announced the release of GraphHopper in the Fediverse and X at the same time, karussell noted that the amount of engagement he got in the Fediverse was much more than on X.
  • Maik Sydoruk and Katja Haferkorn reported on the participation of FOSSGIS e.V. at the KonGeoS conference, which took place from 19 to 22 October in Oldenburg, Germany. This is a conference for geodesy students from universities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, which takes place twice a year.
  • Matt_ has pulled together some information and graphs about the longest connected group of untouched TIGER imported roads (1258.6 km in Brooks County, Texas).
  • After being involved in the September 2023 OSM Hack Weekend (we reported earlier), Volker Krause also participated in the October 2023 OSM Hack Weekend in Berlin.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Nominations for OpenStreetMap Foundation board members closed on 21 October. The six candidates who applied will compete for three available seats. You can pose questions to the candidates until Sunday 29 October.

Local chapter news

  • Lars Lingner reported on the various projects that took place during the OpenStreetMap Hack Weekend Berlin. The event was held on 14 and 15 October at the Wikimedia Germany office.

Events

  • [1] Umbra OSM reported on the committee composition and photographic documentation of the State of the Map Brazil 2023 event. The event was held at the Polytechnic Center, Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba city, Brazil from 2 to 4 October. They have also released various research materials that were presented at the event.
  • Footage of the State of the Map Brazil 2023 event is now available on YouTube.
  • OpenStreetMap India announced that registration for the OpenStreetMap Kerala Community Meetup 2023 is now open.

Maps

  • On Mastodon, karussell admired the level of detail of Disneyland Paris in OSM.

OSM in action

  • Same Scale is a web application to compare two different regions on a map at the same scale. The app uses OpenStreetMap maps, although it does not properly comply with our licence terms.

Open Data

  • Robhubi wrote an article discussing the lack of hiking trail data in the Graph Integration Platform (GIP) dataset, the official transport database for Austria.

Programming

  • Thibault Molleman has created a programme to download all the Imgur photos that are referred to in an OpenStreetMap tag.

Releases

  • Version 8.0 of the GraphHopper route engine has been released. Now it will take into account speed limits for different countries, even if there is no explicit maxspeed tag in OpenStreetMap. Kazakh and Uzbek translations have been added. Data structures have also been adapted to increase the speed of importing OSM data, which is constantly growing.
  • Pierre Béland, aka pierzen, has released Version 1.8_2023-10-23 of their JOSM Waterways Style. This version now includes water features for harbour, dock, water tower, and reservoir. Unclosed polygons are flagged and an option is available to show feature names.
  • Eugene announced the release of OsmAnd version 4.5 for the iOS operating system. It comes with free backups to OsmAnd Cloud, added 3D relief, redesigned widgets integration, and more.
