Breaking news

Mapping campaigns

  • dricardo023 and Alexmol, from the OSM Portugal community, announced on Telegram the creation of an easy and intuitive uMap of the Portuguese telecom antennas with their locations and commercial operators. To help with mapping, the wiki page (pt) > en with the tag communication:mobile_phone was translated into Portuguese.
  • The OSM Switzerland Project of the Month for February and March 2022 is ‘Fixing FIXMEs in OpenStreetMap by resolving the reported problems and removing them’. This time the challenge aims for a statistic curve pointing down – not up! Menu is available in German, English and French.

Mapping

  • ttomasz recently made a pull request to the openstreetmap-carto GitHub project to render amenity=parcel_locker in the OSM-Carto style, and asked for suggestions from local communities by sending a message to several active country subforums.
  • eternaltyro explained how he found an OverpassQL script for downloading, into JOSM, only relevant data about roads used by buses and bus stops. This enables work on mapping and maintaining public transport route relations to cover a much larger area (the metropolis of Chennai). Commenters provided some additional hints about Overpass as well.
  • Guillaume Rischard wrote how a bit of light mapping in Luxembourg City can help when he misses his home town.
  • Voting is underway for the following proposals:
    • transformer=* to refine power transformers’ classification to make it clearer and remove redundancy with substation=* until Monday 21 February
    • boundary=forest a tagging scheme for forest boundaries (managed or unmanaged forests) until Sunday 27 February.

Community

  • A newcomer to OpenStreetMap asked in the forum ‘What do you guys use these maps for?’ and got lots of different answers.
  • OSMF Board Member Tobias Knerr posted a draft resolution defining prerequistes for membership on the OSMF mailing list. He asked for feedback. The board were asked to draft such a resolution at the 2020 AGM.
  • OpenCage published an interview with Abdoullah ibn Ismaïl about OpenStreetMap in Guinea.
  • Alessandra Figueiredo, Elena Veríssimo and Samara Franco, members of a favela mapping collective in Morro do Preventório (Brazil), published a guest post on the HOT blog on how and why they are making sure that their community is represented on the map.
  • OSM Fukushima members have released videos introducing weeklyOSM 598, 599 and 600 (ja). They also explained how to choose the best satellite images and generate a 3D model with Blender.

Local chapter news

  • Here are the results of the OpenStreetMap United States Board Elections 2022. Congratulations to everyone who took part!
  • State of the Map US 2022 published the programme for their event, which will be held from 1 to 3 April in Tucson, Arizona.

Education

  • Strubbl has written (de) > en an easy-to-follow tutorial for Linux users that shows how to generate maps using the map-machine renderer (which we reported earlier) by Sergey Vartanov (aka Enzet). Strubbl’s tutorial gives instructions on how to install Docker, covers cloning the repository, building the Docker image, and explains in great detail the commands to generate the map.

Maps

  • Richard Fairhurst mentioned, on Twitter, that Strava (which uses OSM-based maps) had a ‘Points of Interest FAQ’ that previously suggested to business owners that they could delete things from OpenStreetMap if they didn’t want them to appear on Strava’s Maps. Strava responded quickly to Richard and revised the content of the FAQ. Additionally, their ‘help improve…‘ page is a great introduction to OSM editing for Strava people.

switch2OSM

  • Turkish high speed trains use OSM data, now with attribution to OSM.

Software

  • OsmAnd tweeted that due to a problem on the servers this month, the generation of maps will not take place until 15 February. If you updated or downloaded the maps for February, please delete and download the maps again.
  • Russian firefighters maintain (ru) > en a water supply database that can be exported in kmz format to be used by many applications. For mobile use they suggest switching (ru) > en to OSM-based OrganicMaps as a better alternative to Maps.Me.

  • A pull request by mathisloge added official CMake support to Mapnik. Furthermore, Mapnik can now be built in Windows again.

Releases

  • OpenMapTiles v3.13 has been released and the most significant changes this time are in the transportation layer.
