About us

  • Pieter Vander Vennet has created a graph which analysed weeklyOSM’s outbound links, comparing the number of Twitter and Mastodon links.

Mapping

  • Barro shared their review of the equipment used for micro-mapping in the field while cycling.
  • Zh95967 has created a visualisation of the distribution of the buildings that he mapped in the Klang Valley area, Malaysia.

Community

  • Abhishek Nagaraj, University of California, Berkeley, and Henning Piezunka, INSEAD, discussed how competition can have both positive and negative effects on volunteer motivation, suggesting that while competition may increase engagement for some volunteers, it may discourage others, depending on factors such as personal goals and perceived fairness of the competition. Their research looked at the contributions to OSM made before and after the arrival Google Maps in various regions.
  • 南山少帅Felix198 celebrated their one-year anniversary with OpenStreetMap by completing their 1,000th changeset.
  • Lhirlimann recently mapped Mongolia and became the most active StreetComplete user in Mongolia over a week.
  • Omundy explained how to upload GPS recordings from the Strava app to OpenStreetMap.
  • Volunteers in San José, California, have celebrated OSM’s birthday by mapping the city’s affordable housing complexes (and enjoyed cake).
  • Sangonzag has mapped the city of Marinilla, Colombia.

Events

  • As you know, this week the SotM 2024 will take place in Nairobi, Kenya. Our French volunteer SeverinGeo will be in Nairobi and will report, via his Mastodon account, as much as possible about the event. weeklyOSM will try to retoot and report as much as possible.

OSM research

  • Research by Benjamin Herfort has found the worldwide mean building completeness of an urban centre is 21% in OSM.

Maps

  • [1] Martijn van Exel has created a map comparing the current OpenStreetMap with how it appeared in early 2008, when the map mainly covered areas that were easily accessible to local contributors, reflecting the early stages of community mapping efforts. Please note that in some places the map will be incomplete due to the redaction of data from participants who did not agree to the migration of OSM from Creative Commons to the ODbL license in 2012.

OSM in action

  • Alexey Afanasovich has demonstrated a Wikipedia article that has a template including a map displaying the subject based on OSM data. Later, Alexander showed a template that displays the administrative boundaries of settlements.
  • iamsummer has developed Noraneko Finder (のらねこふぁいんだー) , an interactive map that displays the locations of stray cats around the world. The locations of stray cats are collected through crowdsourcing via Google Forms and Google Spreadsheets.

Open Data

Software

  • Have you always wanted to georeference your images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons? A step-by-step guide to the locator tool explains how you can easily do this.
  • Martin Raifer discussed the recent updates to the OpenStreetMap iD editor including the addition of Panoramax support for street-level imagery, new tagging schema guidelines, and upcoming features such as a building mapping mode, as well as community contributions and upcoming events.

Releases

  • Version 2.30 of the OpenStreetMap iD editor introduced a significant UI update, added the ability to edit complex turn restrictions, and improved map data handling by optimising performance and enhancing the validation process.

Other “geo” things

  • OpenCage released some #geoweirdness geographical trivia about Wales.
  • The Blitzortung website provides real-time maps of lightning strikes around the world, allowing users to track storm activity and lightning events as they happen.
