About us

  • This week we celebrate seven consecutive years of weeklyOSM in Portuguese!
That’s right! Users Elizabete and NunoMASAzevedo began this weekly adventure of translating and reviewing the articles that make up the weekly edition of this weekly newspaper with weeklyOSM No. 431. Congratulations!

Mapping campaigns

  • AE35 has created approximately 6,911 new MapRoulette challenge tasks aimed at adding and improving roads and paths across Zealand, Denmark. The tasks were generated using around 430,764 address points and 209,605 highway geometries. The data processing was performed in PostgreSQL following a download of Danish OpenStreetMap data from GeoFabrik.
  • Tobias Jordans announced the addition of a new view on the TILDA map that displays traffic signs identified by Mapillary’s AI-based image recognition. The feature was developed during the OSM Hack Weekend 2025.

Community

  • CoMaps contributor Jean-Baptiste shared how taginfo can be used to identify OSM errors, so they can be fixed to improve routing.
  • Joost Schouppe discussed the challenges of classifying significant places of worship in OpenStreetMap for risk management, proposing a method using tags including building, place_of_worship, and service_times to filter relevant locations in Belgium. He suggested improving tagging quality and invited community feedback to help refine the approach.
  • MHF Hasna gave a talk titled ‘Mapping for Impact: Introducing Open Mapping to Civil Society in Sri Lanka’ at the State of the Map 2025.
  • Scruss has found blue-coloured road markings (road_marking:colour=blue) in The Meadoway, Toronto, Canada.
  • Andy Townsend has outlined the benefit of vector tiles that support multilingual names. He showed how this is useful for rendering Irish townlands, which are well-mapped in both Irish and English.
  • The Department of Geography, of the University of Philippines Diliman (UPD), has blogged about the State of the Map 2025. The three-day conference was held by the UPD with a hybrid format and with open live streaming of the sessions in the main rooms, with more than 50 presentations.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Next monthly video-meeting of the OSMF board, take place on Thursday 30 October 2025 at 13:00 UTC, unless rescheduled.

    The topics are:

    • Chairperson’s report
    • Secretary’s report
    • Treasurer’s report
    • Fundraising
    • Investigate moving OSMF out of the UK, and into the EU
    • GoFundMe was using the OpenStreetMap trademark to fundraise without permission
    • Any other business
    • Guest comments or questions

Events

  • GeoCamp/SoTMes 2025 is an annual, free and self-financed ‘un-conference’ for the Spanish OpenStreetMap community and the Geoinquietos (Hispanic section of OSGeo), which will take place on 13 December in Zaragoza. The meeting, which promotes the exchange of geomatics, free spatial data and tools, emphasises diversity, youth participation, and environmental awareness.
  • Marc announced a call for contributors to support the OpenStreetMap stand at the upcoming 39C3 Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg. Those interested are invited to add their names to the project’s wiki page.
  • SotMNigeria2025, themed ‘Open Mapping for Change, Community Empowerment, and Sustainable Development in Nigeria’, starts on Tuesday 28 October and runs until 31 October. It will be held at the University of Nigeria, Enugu-Nigeria. The event, organised by the Unique Mappers Network, will highlight the critical role of open mapping practices and geospatial information in promoting change and empowering local communities. Its aim is to strengthen the networking of the mapping community and contribute to Nigeria’s sustainable development through open geospatial data.

Education

  • The Virtual Institute for Sustainable Development has made available, in Zenodo, the content of its training course on mapping with OpenStreetMap, which has already trained around 400 people. By completing the activities presented on the training portal, participants can receive a 60-hour certificate. The complete course is also available for download as a PDF file.
  • The RSU Newbie Mapathon Orientation was a three-day training programme (14 to 16 October) for new members of the Unique Mappers team at Rivers State University, introducing them to digital humanitarian mapping. Participants learnt practical skills in using open source tools such as HOT Tasking Manager, JOSM, and iD so they could contribute to disaster management and sustainable development projects.

OSM research

  • A study of the 28 March 2025 Myanmar earthquake has integrated OpenStreetMap road data with ALOS-2 SAR imagery to spatially quantify earthquake-induced damage, mapping over 39,000 km of affected roads and extensive building destruction across central Myanmar.

Humanitarian OSM

  • OSM US announced that the American Red Cross has asked the OpenStreetMap community to assist in mapping buildings and roads in settlements throughout the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta, following the impact of Typhoon Halong on Alaska’s southwest coast on 11 October.

Maps

  • DataCenter Map is a worldwide map using an OSM background layer.

Software

  • [1] Tobias Knerr has published a style for JOSM which displays direction and similar tags as cones. The style was inspired by the similar rendering already available in iD.
  • Frédéric Rodrigo explained how to reconstruct OpenStreetMap’s semantic object history from technical diffs, enabling better data quality analysis and change review. This approach has been implemented in OpenStreetMap Logical History. This project also provides an API that calculates the semantic history of an area between two dates by retrieving OSM data from an Overpass or Ohsome instance.
  • MapTiler has released a beta version of their GeoSplats, which offers photorealistic 3D models.
  • Vizsim has developed ‘OSM Mapillary Missing Streets’, a map highlighting roads in Germany where street-level imagery is missing on Mapillary. With this map, you can more easily plan routes that cover as many roads as possible where new photos are needed.
  • Over 14% of the phone numbers mapped in Poland are invalid or missing a country code, but for the United Kingdom it’s only 0.27%. What about your region? confusedbuffalo has made a website to help find invalid phone numbers in OSM data, to make it easy to find and fix them, since lots of the issues can be fixed automatically from suggestions. Data is available for a few countries at the moment, but more can easily be added. View the code and submit issues at the repository.
  • Christian Quest reported that the October Panoramax newsletter is currently being distributed, covering the following topics: GoPro Max 2 and suction cup testing, Ciril Group’s integration into GEO, ‘Panneauramax’ (traffic signs) in Panoramax, IGN’s panoramax of Mayotte, SDIS88’s measurement of forest road widths, and more! Read more at Info Panoramax.

Programming

  • Yotsuda has shared a PowerShell module for OpenStreetMap visualisation (PowerShell.Map v1.0.0). It can open interactive maps in your browser directly from simple PowerShell commands and more.

Did you know that …

  • … that there’s a mobile app version of MapComplete available on F-Droid? It’s significantly faster in terms of responsiveness compared to both the web and progressive web app versions.
  • … TrailRouter makes it easier to discover new running routes? According to its own statement, the algorithms favour natural paths through parks, forests, and along bodies of water, and avoid busy roads wherever possible.

OSM in the media

  • Robin Ahrens, from Heise, has published an article about StreetComplete, a user-friendly Android application designed to help contributors fill in missing data on OpenStreetMap.

Other “geo” things

  • Strava has voluntarily dropped its lawsuit against Garmin for alleged patent infringement (heatmaps and Strava Live Segments) after just 21 days. The short legal battle, which was considered technically and strategically risky, was speculated to have severely damaged the extremely important partnership between Strava and Garmin, as Garmin is the main data and customer supplier for Strava’s paid subscriptions.
  • The FLOSS/fund has completed its first year and has now announced the second and final instalment for 2025 amounting to US$675,000, bringing the total allocation to global open source projects to US$1 million. They reflected on the experiences of the first year, highlighted the challenges in allocating funds due to bureaucratic hurdles, emphasised the need for better financial transparency in FOSS projects, and discussed the vision of an Indian Sovereign FOSS Fund.
