Mapping campaigns
- The Wikimedians of Japan User Group took part in the event ‘Promoting the Appeal of Your Local Area with the Power of Digital Technology – Nagahama Castle Town Heritage’ on 22 March this year. During the programme participants toured the area surrounding the Nagahama Hachiman Shrine, capturing photographs for Wikimedia Commons and mapping the neighbourhood through OpenStreetMap.
- Mateusz Konieczny has proposed an automated edit to retag
access=forestryin Poland asmotor_vehicle=forestry. - WilburSunflower is planning to map the gun violence memorials in Albany, NY, for the ‘Compass Roses’ exhibit.
Community
- Kumakyoo has analysed, by means of the
highwaytag, how the current OSM tagging scheme has evolved through a form of ‘swarm intelligence’, a phenomenon where the collective behaviour of decentralised, self-organised systems converges to achieve complex goals. At the same time, he pointed out problems with this status quo, noting that some contributors are holding back their work while waiting for an OSM fork, while others have left the project entirely, either voicing frustration over the never-ending debate about the tagging scheme or departing quietly. - Nlehuby has posted
►
a very detailed blog article on how to map a bus station, including practical advice on how to take field notes and tag bus route relations.
- At the State of the Map US, Nicole Siggins gave a talk on what the MapSwipe community has been up to recently and its future direction. The talk explored how MapSwipe might evolve beyond micro-tasking into becoming an OSM editor in its own right, with potential AI and machine learning integration. The MapSwipe community would love to hear from the OSM community about this potential future. Read the write-up and share your thoughts on this possible future in the accompanying diary post.
- Lynn introduced SPOT, a tool for searching OpenStreetMap data using natural scene descriptions.
- oldnab justified their tagging choices for urban recycling points, using Wikidata for operators, and discussed mapping individual containers vs groups, plus tags for access, waste types, and opening hours.
- SafwatHalaby showed a method for efficiently organising the field mapping of unfamiliar areas by walking each path exactly twice, finishing at the starting point.
OpenStreetMap Foundation
- The OpenStreetMap Foundation is set to hold its 19th Annual General Meeting online on Saturday 13 September at 16:00 UTC. The meeting will take place in the IRC chat room #osmf-gm on the irc.oftc.net network. A key item on the agenda is a board election, with three seats available. Eligible members will receive a single email from the online voting service, which will contain a link to their ballot.
Events
- Dr Raquel Dezidério Souto (Virtual Institute for the Sustainable Development) thanked the 462 participants, from 151 cities in eight countries, for taking part in the III Workshop on Participatory Mapping and Social Cartography. You can watch
the recordings of the sessions of the 100% online event, which was held from 20 to 29 August. The book Case Studies in Collaborative and Participatory Mapping

OSM in action
- Jveuxdusoleil (I want sun), a French app designed to track sunlight across the streets of Paris, has surged in popularity this year, giving residents a digital tool to secure a coveted sunny spot at their favourite cafe terrace. The app uses sun-positioning algorithms along with building-height data from OpenStreetMap to highlight which terraces are bathed in light and which are in the shade.
Software
- Archit Rathod has completed their Temporary Road Closures Database and API for GSoC 2025, launching a live platform that enables real-time closure reporting and routing for cars, bikes, and pedestrians using OpenLR and OpenStreetMap data.
Programming
- Prompted by a discussion about OSM map projections, Andy Townsend has demonstrated how to display OSM vector tile data in a globe view, emphasising that anyone can render OSM data in any projection they want.
Releases
- Version 2.36.0 of iD has been released, introducing several new usability features including indicators, showing who last modified a feature and when.
