Mapping

  • Mateusz Konieczny has proposed an automated edit to migrate maxspeed:advised= to maxspeed:advisory=, as the two tags have the same intended meaning.

Mapping campaigns

  • Stefan Kaufmann reported on a hydrant mapping initiative carried out in collaboration between the Temporärhaus and the Altenstadt Fire Department in Germany.
  • From 19 August to 30 September the National Mapathon of Mexico will take place. Mexico is facing a climate crisis that most severely affects its most vulnerable municipalities, where poverty, marginalisation, and exposure to disasters converge. In response, the National Mapathon of Mexico has emerged as a concrete action for adaptation and resilience through citizen science, with the participation of government institutions and the OSM community , who have led the organisation of the mapathon and will be in charge of the training of the process. Register at: zoom.us
  • Atiya Anis, from HOT, described the NGO’s climate disaster projects, mapping vulnerable regions, particularly in Africa and Latin America.. She said that they are adding 1.4 million building footprints in flood-prone Kenyan cities, post-storm recovery mapping in Malawi and anticipatory flood planning in Ecuador. These projects are generating open geospatial data for disaster preparedness, urban planning, and climate adaptation. She says that resilience can start with a smartphone, satellite imagery, and a global network of volunteer mappers.
  • Bicyclett has launched a new MapRoulette challenge aimed at improving the mapping of cycling infrastructure across Germany. The challenge leverages data from Mapillary, using automatically detected cycling-related traffic signs to identify locations where cycleways are likely missing.

Community

  • Using the IGN digital terrain model and the OSMnx Python package to calculate street inclination angles, user alan_gr has created a map highlighting streets in Málaga, Spain, that should instead be tagged as steps.
  • Matt Whilden explained how to use Taylor Smock’s sidewalk JOSM plugin to easily map pavements and improve pedestrian infrastructure mapping in your city.
  • Raquel Dezidério Souto noted, in her diary, that the book Case Studies in Collaborative and Participatory Mapping (original in Portuguese), which was organised by her and includes 20 chapters on research that adopted collective mapping methodologies, will be released on Friday 29 August at 19:00 UTC, at the Workshop MPCS 2025. You still can register to the event.
  • Christopher Beddow wrote an essay exploring how the concept of stereoscopy, interpreted here as dual validation and multiple observation, can enhance the quality and reliability of crowdsourced geospatial data.
  • After a mapping party for OSM’s 21st birthday, Bastian Greshake Tzovaras reflected on the diversity of OSM tools and how it helps create and sustain OpenStreetMap.

Events

  • Pieter Vander Vennet delivered a presentation titled 'OpenStreetMap for Beginners’ at the recent What Hackers Yearn 2025 hacker camp in Geestmerambacht, the Netherlands, offering an overview of OpenStreetMap, its community, and guidance on getting started.
  • The SOTM LATAM 2025 programme is now online ! This event, which will take place from 4 to 6 September in Medellín, Colombia, will include interesting tracks such as mapping and risk management, mapping of favelas and hillsides, mapping in libraries and schools, mapping in the Amazon, and many more. If you’re going to attend, you can register here .

OSM research

  • A recent study explored how humanitarian mapping via platforms such as OpenStreetMap contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting OSM’s critical role in filling geospatial data gaps. The researchers analysed three platforms: the HOT Tasking Manager, MapSwipe, and Ushahidi.
  • A recent study, published in New Phytologist, has compared herbarium records and iNaturalist observations for documenting plant biodiversity, highlighting the use of OpenStreetMap road data to analyse spatial biases. Researchers leveraged OSM to calculate distances from plant observations to the nearest road.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT mapper/validator @martien-176 highlighted, in a diary post, OSMCha’s value for HOT Tasking Manager job validation. He expressed concern that funding gaps could degrade the tool.

Maps

  • [1] RCD49 reported on five months of data collection, using a high-precision GNSS receiver, to map the historic Jewish cemetery in Mannheim. The map, which has been online since 2024, is currently integrating the names and dates of the oldest purely Hebrew gravestones in order to support genealogical research, among other things.
  • Zsolt Ero reported that the latest viral trend on the Internet, Wplace, a collaborative pixel-art platform that overlays a live canvas on an OpenStreetMap-based world map, caused the OpenFreeMap service to crash after handling at least 100,000 requests per second and 215 TB of map tile traffic. Zsolt has since communicated with the Wplace developer to set up their own self-hosted map tile server so it will no longer burden the OpenFreeMap servers.

Open Data

  • Asahi Shimbun has launched a project listing all 369 unresolved murder cases across Japan, featuring an interactive Mapbox-based map, using data from OpenStreetMap with full attribution.

Software

  • Mubarak Basha has developed MBCompass, an Android compass app that displays direction and live location on top of an OpenStreetMap base map.
  • HeiGIT reported that they have developed a QGIS plugin for risk assessments that allows for a flexible risk assessment workflow applicable across different disaster types and geographies. To support users in applying the plugin effectively, HeiGIT has also developed a comprehensive guide.
  • Tracestrack has released a completely revamped OpenStreetMap route database. Users can now search and explore route relations with advanced filtering by name, reference, country, type, network, operator, and locations. This enhanced platform provides streamlined access to OpenStreetMap’s route data for researchers, developers, transportation planners, and mapping enthusiasts worldwide.
  • nanolab-ua has developed squadrats-osmand-overlay, a tool that displays Squadrat data, an outdoor location-based game, as a semi-transparent overlay in OsmAnd.

Releases

  • Organic Maps has rolled out its August 2025 update, introducing new features, including the ability to display hiking and cycling routes from OpenStreetMap.
  • Andrii Holovin announced that after two and a half years of anticipation (we reported earlier), his improved version of Switch2OSM has finally appeared on the main domain. Switch2OSM is a web resource created to help organisations and developers transition to using OpenStreetMap. The site is available in English, Ukrainian, and Taiwanese Mandarin, and is seeking new translations.

Did you know that …

  • … there is a tutorial explaining how to use PLUS Mobility Lab’s NetAScore with OpenStreetMap and OpenRouteService to do walkability and bikeability analysis?

Other “geo” things

  • Ralf Hersel, of GNU/Linux.ch, explained how to improve GNSS performance on Android smartphones running custom ROMs by using microG, an open-source implementation of Google Play Services.
