Mapping

  • François Lacombe announced the start of the voting for line_attachment=* proposal, which is supposed to add information how lines such as power or telecom lines are attached to their supports.
  • Contributions of poor quality by Amazon Logistics (up to adding roads in former villages in a coal mine) are discussed on the German OSM forum – not for the first time.
  • The OSM user stadtvermesser asked in the OSM Forum the question how to map drinking water wells correctly. He found a description in the OSM Wiki, but it is contradictory.
  • The proposal how to improve information on utility markers is waiting for comments.
  • Leif Rasmussen has put the connectivity=*proposal forward for voting. The proposal aims to improve the tagging of lanes connections with a new type=connectivity-relation.

Community

  • The mappers in the OSM Telegram group have put together a form to better know the people our community is made of. Everyone is welcome to submit. The results will be published 11th of August. The form itself is here and more info on it can be found on this diary post.
  • FOSS4G Korea 2019 will be held (automatic translation) at 10 and 11 October in Busan, South Korea. Shin Sanghee from Gaia3D, a Korean geospatial company, proposed (automatic translation) to hold a QGIS 3.8 translating party in the conference. Participants are listed at OSGeo wiki.

Imports

  • Borbus plans to continue his improvement of the coastline data for the UK with help of OS VectorMap. He already completed the coastline around The Wash and asked the community for advice on some points he noticed.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • OSMF’s Communication Working Group is looking for help with translating blog post and surveys to the contributors languages.
  • The minutes for the Licensing Working Group meeting on 13 June 2019 are available.

Events

  • In order to be able to help people in crisis areas quickly, helpers depend on high-quality maps. For many areas, these maps must first be produced. In doing so, Doctors Without Borders is supported by modern technology – and by thousands of volunteers. On 6 August 2019 from 17:00 – 20:00 meet interested people for a Missing Maps Mapathon in Berlin.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT is partnering with Development Seed, Facebook, and Microsoft to build AI-based mapping tools. With the ML-Enabler, that provides applications such as HOT-‘s Tasking Manager the possibility to make use Machine Learning, HOT has reached an important milestone.

switch2OSM

  • The Instituto Geográfico Nacional de la República Argentina (National Geographic Institute in Argentina) is using (es) OpenStreetMap data in its vector map (es)
starting from zoom 12 (es) for more detailed maps at large scale. (Reported by OpenStreetMap Argentina)On the contrary, Institut Cartogràfic Valencià (from Valencian Community, autonomous community of Spain) uses its own data for detailed maps within its boundaries. They do rely on (es) OpenStreetMap data for others regions and countries, at low scale.

Software

  • SMARTS (Scalable Microscopic Adaptive Road Traffic Simulator) is a traffic simulator developed at the School of Computing and Information Systems of the University of Melbourne. The simulator allows easy setup of simulations based on OpenStreetMap data.
  • Trufi, the app for shared taxis that serve fixed routes (we reported) which was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, now finds – probably under the name Trotro also the way to Accra, Ghana, – as can be seen at AccraMobile3. Trotro in Accra on Twitter.

Programming

  • Russian mapper Zkir created a new validator, which is used to verify availability of 3d models for churches and some historical buildings. You may ask: Why churches? Because they are the most noticeable objects and you can find photos for modeling on temples.ru. At this moment validation works in some districts of Moscow region, Vladimir region and Yaroslavl region (Russia), this is all that fits into a square degree [56°, 38°].

Releases

  • Version 19.06 of JOSM has been released. Enhancements include the possibility of filtering the imagery list by country name, HTTP/2 support, GUI improvements and many more.
  • User wambacher has released version 4.4.7 of his OSM Admin Boundaries Map. The improvements includes OAuth authorisation and better error messages.
  • The popular navigation software OsmAnd has been updated. The new version comes with the possibility to create application profiles that allow customised routing, a new compass on the map with the radius ruler and the ‘Turn Screen On’ option, which turns the screen on when approaching a turn while having the screen off during long straight sections.
  • The Tasking Manager team has released version v3.4.0 of their software tool for the coordination of volunteers and organisation of groups to
map on OpenStreetMap. The changes in the new version are detailed
in GitHub. People interested in the development can join the bi-weekly working group meetings.

Did you know …

  • … the JOSM measurement plugin?
