Education
- Raquel Dezidério Souto has published A Guide to the Training Session 2 – Mapping areas in OpenStreetMap with JOSM editor and the Training Session 3 – Validation with JOSM editor and other programs, which was prepared for the mapping sessions that IVIDES DATA held in September and October 2025. This initiative is described in her OpenStreetMap user diary.
OSM research
- The Proceedings of OSM Science 2024, from the scientific track of the State of the Map 2024, held in Nairobi (Kenya), has been published.
OSM in action
- Forcen found that the newly released first-person shooter game Battlefield 6 includes OpenStreetMap data. OSM was listed in the game’s credits page.
Software
- Jatmiko Herjati has developed GeoConverter, a GDAL-powered web app for transforming GIS vector data between formats. It performs 100% client-side processing, so your files never leave your browser.
- Organic Maps has been added to taginfo projects.
- The OSM Perfect Intersection Editor (OSMPIE), introduced by Mikhail Kuzin, is a new closed-source web tool for precisely editing
roads and intersections in right-hand drive countries using semantic models, featuring a change viewer, GeoJSON export, and suggestions for improved tagging structures.
- Due to excessive server load from automated queries via Azure and AWS infrastructure, the Overpass API is temporarily blocking parts of these cloud providers. This measure is expected to last around eight weeks while a fairer resource distribution is implemented.
Programming
- aselnigu posted, in her OSM user diary, about the creation of notes with MapLibre control and the creation of a control for layers (LayerTree control) using Leaflet, also in MapLibre.
- Subins2000 has developed a Grand Theft Auto: Vice City-themed map style on MapLibre GL JS. Based on this map style, there’s a static map of Kochi, a city in India that has several similarities with Vice City in the game, and an interactive world map based on OpenStreetMap data.
Releases
- CoMaps has released version 2025-10-09, with improvements to routing for bikes and cars, as well as better search and improved map styles.
- [1] Karussell reported that version 11.0 of the GraphHopper routing engine has been released, it now features an improved routing algorithm for avoiding private roads.
Did you know that …
- … ftrebien, a Brazilian mapper, has maintained
for over 10 years a page on the OSM wiki to organise a reference on tag translation schemes for Brazilian Portuguese? The scheme takes into account discussions he had with mappers from different regions of the country and served as the basis for the tagging schemas of the iD and JOSM editors.
Other “geo” things
- Miguel Garcia Alvarez publishes the interesting blog ‘A Cartographer’s Tale’, which this week discussed Islarios (collections of maps of islands) published in the 15th and 16th centuries.
- Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology have developed a method to make standard GNSS accurate to within centimetres, even in dense urban areas, using
freely available correction data and smart algorithms, without relying on expensive services.
- Sozialhelden e.V. is looking
►
for someone to fill a part-time position in their a11yscore and Wheelmap projects. The role involves contributing to a11yscore, a data-driven tool assessing accessibility across regions worldwide, and supporting Wheelmap, an interactive map of wheelchair-accessible locations. Candidates with experience or interest in inclusion and accessibility, as well as knowledge of open data, geo-data, GIS systems, or OpenStreetMap, are encouraged to apply.
