Mapping

  • Mateusz Konieczny plans to remove duplicates tags such as sustenance=fast_food together with amenity=fast_food and atm=yes with amenity=atm. Like all mechanical edit plans, this one has caused some discussion on the tagging mailing list.
  • Joseph Eisenberg revived his idea to tag individual pitches within a campsite with his proposal of tourism=camp_pitch. His previous rejected proposal was named camp_site=camp_pitch.
  • On the Talk-at mailing list, OSM mapper Christian Aigner asked (automatic translation) how to map schools for Shiatsu training. Since he didn’t find a suggestion in the OSM Wiki, he asked if he should use the tags amenity=education and education=shiatsu. This was denied because amenity=education was set to be deprecated. Another OSM mapper referred him to the German OSM Forum.
  • The revised version of the proposal Key:changing_table has been accepted, and it now replaces Key:diaper. Valor Naram has written an orientation guide for mappers who may be familiar with the old key.
  • Geofabrik has rewritten the Routing View in OSM Inspector, which is used by many mappers to find unconnected roads and other routing-related issues. The blog article at the company’s homepage provides some more details on the changes.
  • OSMCha now supports creating groups of OSM mappers, and either filtering or hiding changesets made by group members.

Community

  • Starting with the Milton Keynes South parliamentary constituency on 12 June 2019, the UK OpenStreetMap community launched a series of UK 24 hours mapathons to improve the map of the UK. Parliamentary constituencies were chosen as they have roughly equal populations.
  • The Swiss OpenStreetMap Association has published a blog post detailing its activities in 2018 and the outlook for the near future.

Imports

  • Alexis Athlan from L214, a French Animal Welfare Organisation, announced the plan to import tags which describe the availability of vegan and vegetarian food in 1400 restaurants in France.
  • David Morais Ferreira requested feedback concerning a possible import of around 500 remarkable trees in Luxembourg.
  • Atakua wrote about the things he has learnt during the import of landuse/landcover data in Sweden. The comprehensive blog post is a must read for all those interested in the topic as it covers a lot of practical guidance and goes far beyond the content of this topic in the OSM wiki.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The OSMF published the Annual Report (PDF) of FOSSGIS e.V., its local chapter in Germany.
  • The minutes of the License Working Group meeting on 9 May have been published. The draft Attribution Guidance was discussed during the meeting and readers may remember that the attribution topic caused some noise in the community recently.

Events

  • [1] The talks held at the recent State of the Map France are being posted online (fr).
  • SNCF engineers presented the joint work of SNCF and Geofabrik, Karlsruhe, on the development of a routing tool for calculating train paths on the European rail network. Their innovative clothing also impressed many during the SotM France. 😉
  • OSM Mapper ScubbX has posted on the Talk-at mailing list that there are still 10 free Expo tickets available for AGIT 2019. The AGIT (2 to 5 July) is the largest geo-exhibition in the German-speaking area. The OSM community will be represented with a stand, where help is still needed.
  • Philippine OpenStreetMap contributor GOwin reported about an upcoming local conference, Pista ng Mapa, to be held on 1 to 3 August in Dumaguete City. The conference will feature workshops, talks about open geodata, OpenStreetMap, and discussion panels about the concerns of the local mapping communities. The conference is open to the general public (requires RSVP), and is available free of charge.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT welcomed 38 new voting members.
  • The daily newspaper Trierischer Volksfreund reported about a mapathon in Saarbücken. Vocational school students supported the organisation Doctors Without Borders by using their mapping skills acquired in an Erasmus+ project to make it easier for beginners to take their first steps in JOSM. Together they improved the map data in Congo.

Education

  • After enjoying SotM-FR user Polyglot decided to organise a series of Hangout sessions in French to explain how the PT_Assistant plugin works for editing public transport itineraries. The first will be on Wednesday 26 June at 19h30 CEST.

Maps

  • OpenStreetMap Belgium announced the availability of new hillshades based on public height data in the Flemish Region and Wallonia and showcase the new layers in an online map.
  • uMap instances are becoming increasingly popular. The local German OSMF chapter FOSSGIS has funded (de) (translation) the new uMap instance at openstreetmap.de.
  • Since mid May 2019 a Twitter bot named “OSMTrekkingTips” has been tweeting a link about a castle or a palace on the “Castle Dossier Map” from the account @trending_places (translation) starting at 12 noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The bot was developed by Geometa Lab (Prof. Stefan Keller) to promote OSM in Swiss tourism. (Python Source Code).

Open Data

Licences

  • The OSMF License Working Group has completed an investigation (PDF) as to whether a better license exists for map tiles generated by OSMF servers than the current CC-BY-SA 2.0.

Software

  • Frédéric Rodrigo has forked the iD editor and made the version available on id.openstreetmap.fr. He has reverted some controversial, much discussed, changes made in the main branch.
  • The heads of OSMAnd and Maps.Me joined (ru) their efforts on a new project – OpenPlaceReviews. It is expected to help to map points of interest in OSM and also store reviews about them. (automatic translation)
  • The largest festivities in the Azores, Portugal, take place 21 to 30 June in Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island. Azoid Eco Technology (automatic translation) published an app and added an OSM-based map to every event. The app is available for iOS and Android. To know more go to www.sanjoaninas.pt (automatic translation). Maybe in 2020 they could correctly attribute and mention the origin of the data. 😉
  • The MapOSMatic instance at osm-baustelle.de now supports Umap GeoJSON files via the Umap API without browser interaction. In a blog post Hartmut explains how to do this and gives some background info.

Programming

  • There is speculation that Mapbox has stopped working on version 3.0 of its Mapbox Vector Tile specification. However, it is a fact that the Open Geospatial Consortium is working on a vectortile specification.
  • JasonManoloudis details his Google Summer of Code project in his OSM user diary. He aims to implement the ability to render traffic signs with custom text in the 3D renderer OSM2World.
  • Changeset uploads are now handled by cgimap (written in C++) instead of the Rails Port (Ruby on Rails implementation of the OSM API), making uploads faster from editors like JOSM and iD. Ilya Zverev explains (translation) the details in his blog “SHTOSM”.
  • The developer from 2GIS (a well-known navigator in Russia) writes (translation) in a corporate blog about how one can create one’s own navigator from open sources in just a couple of days.

Releases

  • The latest release of Maps (a Maps.Me fork on F-Droid), 9.1.6, finally fixes a longstanding bug preventing users from authenticating into OSM. Now it is possible to edit using the app again.
  • In his user diary Simon Poole details the changes made in the minor release of the mobile editor Vespucci, which consists of mainly UI improvements.
  • The iD maintainers have created a pull request which reverts some of the controversial
    changes, which were discussed recently.

Did you know …

  • … how to tag a a public cabinet that is used to store books to be borrowed by everybody? That’s a amenity=public_bookcase.

Other “geo” things

  • The world as a flower ball in the shore garden on the flower island Mainau in Lake Constance.
  • An online map portal for European geodata was presented at the Geospatial World Forum in Amsterdam. It was developed by thinkWhere to demonstrate the potential of a single access point to public data.
